A poetic and charming love-story about a perfectly ordinary couple, living in a perfectly ordinary town. The town in question is Paterson, New Jersey.

The man in question, in true Jarmusch style, is also named Paterson played with pinpoint subtly by Adam Driver. Paterson is a hard-working bus driver who quietly goes about his duties, all the while allowing the scenery and eavesdropped conversation to inspire his main passion in life; writing poetry.

Meanwhile, his girlfriend and the love of his life, played without fault by Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani, is a stay-at-home creative. She spends her day baking imaginative cupcakes and making new curtains from scratch.

The films narrative centres around a seven day week. Each day brings a new variation on the theme, and each moment a reflection on two people who wholeheartedly accept each other for who they are.

Paterson is a quiet and contemplative film that sits perfectly in Jarmusch's repertoire. It's a film about how people choose to live their life, regardless of the necessities to work and make money.

Like poetry, the words and images flow with little dramatic tension or conflict. Jarmusch explained at Cannes that he intended Paterson to be an antidote to the modern action film, and if this is the case, I'll definitely be coming back for another dose.

Paterson is a drama film written and directed by Jim Jarmusch. The film stars Adam Driver as a bus driver and poet named Paterson, and Golshifteh Farahani as his wife, who dreams of being a country music star and opening a cupcake business.

The film spans one week, beginning with Monday, in the life of Paterson, a bus driver in Paterson, New Jersey.

Every day follows much the same pattern: Paterson gets up early and goes to work, where he listens to passengers talking and, during pauses, writes poetry in a notebook he carries with him.

After work he walks Marvin, his wife's dog, and stops for a beer at Shades Bar, where he interacts with the other patrons and the owner, Doc Barry Shabaka Henley.

Paterson's wife, Laura, loves his poems and has long urged him to publish them or at least make copies. He finally promises to go to the copy shop on the weekend.

But when Paterson and Laura come home from a movie Saturday night, they find that Marvin has shredded his notebook, destroying his poems. The next day, a dejected Paterson goes for a walk and sits down at his favorite site, the Great Falls of the Passaic River.

There, a Japanese man Masatoshi Nagase takes a seat beside him and begins a conversation about poetry after Paterson notices that the man is reading the book-length poem Paterson by William Carlos Williams.

The man seems to know that Paterson himself is a poet even though he denies it and hands him a gift, an empty notebook. The film ends with Paterson writing a poem in his new notebook.

In April , it was announced that Jim Jarmusch would write and direct a film about a poet living in Paterson, New Jersey. The film was shot over 30 days in fall , in Paterson, New Jersey , and various locations in New York.

The poet Ron Padgett provided the poems attributed to the character Paterson, while Jarmusch wrote the poem "Water Falls" attributed to a young girl in the film.

The film had its world premiere on May 16, , at the Cannes Film Festival , where it competed for the Palme d'Or. The site's critical consensus reads, " Paterson adds another refreshingly unvarnished entry to Jim Jarmusch's filmography—and another outstanding performance to Adam Driver's career credits.

Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a positive review, writing: "A mild-mannered, almost startlingly undramatic work that offers discreet pleasures to longtime fans of the New York indie-scene veteran, who can always be counted on to go his own way.

The brilliantly cryptic finale explores what it means to work back from personal setbacks to find a new source of inspiration. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Accessed June 30, Exactly one week in the life of a young man named Paterson of Paterson, New Jersey is presented.

He lives an extremely regimented and routinized life, that routine perhaps most vividly displayed by the fact that he is able to wake up at exactly the same time every day without an alarm.

That life includes eating Cheerios for breakfast, walking to work carrying his brown bag lunch packed in his lunch pail by his wife Laura, having a casual chat with his colleague Donny before he begins his shift driving the 23 Paterson bus for the local public transit company, walking home where he straightens out the exterior mailbox which somehow during the day gets knocked crooked, eating dinner with Laura and listening to her goings-on of the day, taking Laura's English bulldog Marvin - who he would admit to himself he doesn't much like - out for a walk to his neighborhood bar where he has one and only one beer before walking home with Marvin.
